Altering the rumen ecosystem by supplementing fats for improving animal production is a significant scientific challenge that could bring remarkable effects on animal health, farm management, and animal productivity. In this book, we delve into the intricate world of ruminant nutrition, focusing on the utilization of virgin coconut oil (VCO) and lard at different levels to enhance the performance of goats.

The genesis of this research stems from a deep-seated commitment to addressing the needs of farmers and small ruminant producers. Having grown up in the countryside and witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by farmers, the motivation to seek innovative solutions to enhance their economic well-being became paramount. It is within this context that the journey into exploring the impact of dietary fats on goat production began.

As the author, I am inspired by my upbringing and experiences, particularly my academic journey in the field of ruminant nutrition. Having previously explored large ruminant nutrition during my master’s studies, with a focus on Carabaos, I felt compelled to extend my research to small ruminants. This book represents the culmination of that endeavor, aimed at contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of ruminant nutrition, particularly in the context of goat production.

I am deeply grateful to the Filipino people and its administering agencies, including DOST/PCAARRD/SEI, through the Accelerated Science & Technology Human Resource Development Program, for providing the necessary support and resources that made this research possible. Their investment in scientific research and development has paved the way for meaningful contributions to agricultural innovation and sustainable development.

The research presented in this book is focused on the utilization of virgin coconut oil and lard at different levels on goat-fed concentrate, with a comprehensive examination of various parameters including voluntary feed intake, rumen conditions, apparent nutrient digestibility, and sequential degradation of Napier grass and concentrates. It is my hope that the findings presented herein will not only contribute to the scientific discourse but also offer practical insights and solutions to enhance goat production and support the livelihoods of farmers.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all those who have contributed to this endeavor, directly or indirectly. It is my sincere hope that this book will serve as a valuable resource for researchers, academicians, practitioners, and policymakers alike, as we collectively strive towards sustainable and resilient agricultural systems.
